Carpe Diem! This October, explore the world of the macabre as we learn about memento mori (Latin for “remember that you die”) through the ages. From vanitas still lifes to funerary inscriptions, we will learn about the rich culture of mortality in Western culture. Each week we will learn about a different aspect of death culture through art which will connect to foundational art lessons. We will use this information to make five new artworks. For example, our section on the Danse Macabre from the Dark ages will also teach us about movement and figure drawing in art. We will end the class by creating a large, finished work that combines all these techniques into your own personal memento mori artwork.
